Drought Tolerant Turf: Facts and Fallacies About Turf in Design
Turfgrass Water Conservation Alliance

Everyone knows about the “miracle grass” that promises the moon and delivers sad, scraggly patches of weeds. With so much uncertainty and misinformation, why should Landscape Architects and landscape Designers try to use turf at all? Join Turfgrass Water Conservation Alliance Program Administrator, Jack Karlin, as he explores the fact and fallacy behind claims of drought tolerance in turf, the water budgeting advantages of drought tolerant turf, and why turf is still a critical element in the Landscape Architect’s tool box.

Presenter: Jack Karlin, TWCA Program Administrator

Bringing Concrete to Life – Applying Principles of Reconciliation Ecology in Urban Waterfronts
ECOncrete

Description: We will present an emerging approach that involves the planning, design and retrofitting of urban waterfronts and related coastal infrastructure for creating multi-functional Blue-Green structures using ecologically sensitive designs and construction technologies that enhance their ability to provide valuable ecosystem services. These services are critical along urbanized coastlines, especially in light of growing threats in the form of increased storm intensity, frequency, and sea level rise, calling for significant coastal hardening.

Presenter: Dr. Ido Sella, CEO, ECOncrete Tech Ltd

How Landscape Architects can Lead on Sustainability Beyond the Building
SITES®/USGBC

When appropriately integrated into a project team, a landscape professional has the ability to drastically improve the sustainability of any landscape project. The Sustainable SITES Initiative provides tools to elevate the role of a landscape architect in order to drive sustainable outcomes beyond the building. This session will discuss how landscape architects can utilize the SITES rating system to achieve their sustainability goals for specific projects and to transform their professional practice. It will include a discussion on how the rating system is transforming the market by requiring an integrated design team, which includes landscape professionals, from day one. It will also cover the changes the first SITES Accredited Professionals (APs) have seen in their work and their ability to elevate the value of landscapes in the built environment as a result of earning their new credential.

Presenter: Megan Gonzales (PLA), Green Business Specialist, GBCI

How Big is the Return on Investment (ROI) from Trees in Cities? (Hint – it can be Massive)
Citygreen

Both public and private entities have asset registers – recording and tracking the value of assets. In Cities this includes roads, parks, street furniture, and so on. Increasingly – and rightly so – trees are being included as quantifiable assets. In the past, it has been hard to quantify the value of trees, but today there are a number of methodologies for doing so.

Learn how a City was able to grow trees worth 34 times as much as control trees – in one quarter of the time!

To provide an even greater environmental and monetary benefit – we can incorporate rainwater harvesting, to include management and control of flows (reduced infrastructure burden and cost), and pollutant removal (prevention of soluble pollutants from reaching our waterways and oceans).

Presenter: Joe Gooden, Citygreen USA
